Understanding Engagement Rate

πŸ“ˆ Understanding engagement rate

The engagement rate (ER) helps you evaluate posts more fairly than with likes alone. It answers the question: How strongly do people react to the content β€” relative to how many people saw it?

If you're brand new to Insights, start with Introduction to KNOWYOURCHAT Insights.

Especially when comparing formats or optimizing content, ER is often more useful than individual metrics. A post with 10 likes can be "better" than one with 100 likes if it generates significantly more interaction per view/reach in relative terms.

1) What is engagement rate?

If you want a clean refresher on the basic metrics (views, reach, likes, comments), see Metrics explained: views, reach, likes, comments.

The engagement rate is a metric that aggregates interactions and puts them in relation to distribution.

Put simply:

  • interactions (e.g. likes, comments, shares, saves)

divided by

  • distribution (e.g. views or reach)

Which base is used (views or reach) can vary by platform and data availability.

2) Which interactions count?

Depending on the platform, the following typically feed into the engagement rate and interaction overview in KNOWYOURCHAT:

  • Likes
  • Comments
  • Shares
  • Saves

On video platforms there are additional signals you should look at separately:

  • Watch time
  • Audience retention

3) Why ER is better than likes alone

Likes are easy to get and depend heavily on

  • reach/distribution
  • audience
  • format
  • timing

ER helps you make posts more comparable because it looks at the reaction per unit of visibility.

Typical situations:

  • High views, low ER: good hook/distribution, but the content doesn't hold up.
  • Low views, high ER: highly relevant content for a smaller audience β†’ worth distributing more widely.

4) How to compare ER meaningfully

For a fair comparison, always start in Insights with:

For ER to be truly meaningful:

  • Compare within the same platform.
  • Compare within the same format (e.g. TikTok video with TikTok video).
  • Use a time period that contains enough data (often 30 or 90 days).

⚠️ Important: ER is not "the truth" β€” it's a compass. Use it together with saves, shares, and video retention.

5) Tips to improve your engagement rate

  • Stronger hook: Make it clear in the first seconds/lines why it's worth sticking around.
  • More practical value: checklists, steps, examples, clear takeaways (saves often rise along with them).
  • More specific CTA: ask a question, invite opinions, "Which option would you choose?"
  • Test formats consistently: Don't change everything at once.

βœ… Best practice: Every week, take 3 posts with high ER and 3 with low ER. Compare structure, length, hook, and topic β€” and derive 1–2 concrete test ideas for next week.
