Instagram Instants: what's behind the new feature - and why it's not all upside

With "Instants", Instagram has introduced a new feature designed to put spontaneous, ephemeral content front and center. Users can take photos directly with the camera and send them to friends or mutual followers. The pictures disappear after being viewed, or at the latest after 24 hours.

At first glance, this is strongly reminiscent of familiar features from Snapchat or BeReal. In fact, Meta itself positions Instants as a way to capture "moments in the moment" – without editing, filters, or elaborate staging.

The real question, however, is:

Does Instagram really need yet another form of content?

What exactly are Instagram Instants?

Instants live directly in Instagram's DM area and work far more spontaneously than classic Stories or posts.

Users can take a photo directly in the app, optionally add a short caption, and then send the picture to close friends or mutual followers. The content disappears after being viewed, or at the latest after 24 hours.

What's particularly interesting is that pictures can't be uploaded from the gallery. Instagram obviously wants to prevent content from being heavily edited or staged.

Meta describes the feature as "more authentic" and "less curated". Instead of perfect feeds, spontaneous everyday moments are meant to take center stage again.

Instagram keeps moving away from the classic feed

The launch of Instants once again shows where social media is currently heading.

The classic public feed is steadily losing importance. Platforms are shifting their focus more and more toward private communication, spontaneous content, and smaller groups.

You can see this development almost everywhere by now: Stories, broadcast channels, Close Friends, or disappearing messages all ultimately follow the same direction.

Instagram is responding to behavior that has been changing for years. Many users post less publicly while at the same time sharing significantly more content privately. Instants fits exactly into this development.

More authenticity, or just the next copycat attempt?

This is exactly where the debate around Instants begins, though. To many users, the new feature feels like yet another attempt to adopt successful concepts from other platforms. The similarities to Snapchat or BeReal are hard to miss.

At the same time, the question arises whether spontaneous content is really automatically more authentic. Because even supposedly "real" content now follows clear mechanics. Users still think about which picture to send, how they come across, or what reaction a photo might trigger.

This may simply create a new form of social pressure:
no longer posting perfect content, but appearing as spontaneous and "real" as possible. Younger users in particular could feel even more strongly that they have to be permanently available and shareable.

Why Instants is also being viewed critically right now

Another point of criticism concerns how the feature is operated. Many users currently report having sent pictures by accident or not properly understanding the new feature at first. One reason is that Instants has been integrated very closely into the existing messaging area.

On top of that: the feature is visible and enabled by default. For many users, this initially creates confusion rather than clear added value.

The topics of data protection and privacy are also likely to remain under discussion for ephemeral formats. While the pictures disappear for recipients after a short time, according to Meta's own statements, Instants are still stored in the user's private archive.

How to turn off Instagram Instants

If you don't want to use the feature, you can now disable or hide Instants.

Here's how it currently works:

  1. Open Instagram
  2. Open your profile
  3. Select the menu at the top right
  4. Open "Content preferences"
  5. Enable "Hide Instants in inbox"

This hides Instants in the messaging area. Users can then neither send nor receive Instants.

Alternatively, you can temporarily mute the section by pressing and holding the Instants display and swiping right.

What Instants means for companies and brands

For companies, Instants is likely to be less relevant at first than classic Stories or Reels. Still, the feature shows very clearly where social media is heading: away from perfectly staged content – toward more personal, faster, and more direct formats.

Brands in particular increasingly face a challenge as a result: how do you create content that feels authentic without becoming arbitrary?

Because spontaneous formats only work well in the long run if there's still a clear strategy, recognizability, and consistent communication. That's exactly where many companies are currently failing.

Why central content systems are becoming ever more important

The development around Instants once again shows how quickly platforms introduce new formats, features, and requirements. For social media teams, this means: more platform logic, more formats, and more coordination. That's exactly why central systems for content processes are becoming ever more important.

KNOWYOURCHAT helps companies not only organize social media across platforms, but also develop content strategically – regardless of which new features platforms introduce next.

With central approvals, AI-powered content support, platform planning, and bundled Insights, you get a system that helps teams keep an overview even with constantly new formats.

The real challenge today is no longer publishing content. The real challenge is communicating consistently despite permanent platform changes.

Conclusion

Instagram Instants is more than just a new feature for disappearing photos. Its launch clearly shows where social media is moving: more private communication, more spontaneous content, and less public perfection.

At the same time, the feature raises questions. Does Instagram really need even more formats? Does it actually create more authentic communication? Or merely a new form of digital pressure?

The coming months will show whether Instants becomes relevant in the long term or remains just the next short-lived platform feature.
