Instagram limitations
Instagram doesn't make all features available through its official APIs. That's why KNOWYOURCHAT deliberately cannot offer some things, even though they would be possible in the Instagram app.
This page goes one level deeper: you'll find not only what doesn't work, but also how to recognize it, what you can do instead, and which checks you should run before contacting support.
If you first want to quickly check what is generally possible (✅/❌), use the overview API capabilities for Instagram.
The basic principle: why are there limitations?
- KNOWYOURCHAT accesses the official Instagram APIs.
- Instagram decides which features are available externally.
- Depending on account type, permissions, and API requirements, features may be available or restricted.
Quick check: if something is missing, check first
Before assuming there's a bug, check these points:
If you're not sure whether it's a genuine outage or an API limit, the overview page Platform limitations is also a good starting point.
- Channel connection: Is Instagram still connected, or is a reconnect needed? → see Add social media channels
- Permissions: Do you have admin/page rights on Meta/Instagram?
- Account type: Is the account a Business/Creator setup that allows API access?
- Roles in KNOWYOURCHAT: Are you allowed to publish, moderate, approve? → see Invite your team & assign roles and Understanding statuses & approvals in the Calendar
Publishing limitations (Posts)
This is mainly about things users "expect" from Instagram that the APIs simply don't provide.
If you want to set up the workflow (draft → review → approval → scheduled/published) cleanly, these pages are the best companions:
1) Deleting published posts in KNOWYOURCHAT
- Status: ❌ not possible
- How do you notice? You won't find a delete option in the post editor.
- Workaround: Delete the post directly in Instagram.
- Best practice: Use approval/review properly in KNOWYOURCHAT before publishing, so you rarely have to intervene afterwards.
2) Updates to deleted posts are not applied automatically
- Status: ❌ not available
- How do you notice? A post is gone from Instagram but may still appear in KNOWYOURCHAT or with an outdated status.
- Workaround: Reload the page, check your filters, and if needed mark the post as "done" in KNOWYOURCHAT.
3) Tagging profiles in Stories
- Status: ❌ not available
- How do you notice? Profile tags are missing from the Story options.
- Workaround: Create the final Story in Instagram or add the link/sticker there.
4) Alt text / alt description for images
- Status: ❌ not available
- How do you notice? No alt text field in the post editor.
- Workaround: Set the alt text directly in Instagram.
- Best practice: If accessibility matters to you, define this step as a fixed part of your publishing process.
5) Disabling comments before publishing
- Status: ❌ not available
- How do you notice? No "disable comments" option before posting.
- Workaround: Disable comments in Instagram after publishing.
Inbox limitations
The Inbox is strong for replies, assignments, and overview. However, some "platform-native" actions aren't possible via APIs.
If you're new to the Inbox, start with Inbox.
Not available
- Liking / unliking a post: ❌
- Hiding / unhiding a post: ❌
- Blocking / unblocking users: ❌
What this means in day-to-day use
- You can handle comments and DMs centrally.
- For certain moderation actions (blocking, liking a post) you'll need to switch briefly to the Instagram app.
Direct message (DM) limitations
DMs are often more heavily limited via APIs than comments.
1) DM message requests
- Status: ❌ import not available
- How do you notice? "Message requests" don't show up in the Inbox.
- Workaround: Check and accept the requests in Instagram. After that, the conversation usually continues as a normal thread.
2) Writing new (outgoing) DMs
- Status: ❌ not available
- How do you notice? There is no "new message" option for a user.
- Workaround: Start new conversations in Instagram. In KNOWYOURCHAT, you can reply within existing threads.
3) Displaying media in DMs (images/videos)
- Status: ❌ retrieval not available
- How do you notice? Media is missing from DMs or only text is shown.
- Workaround: View the media directly in Instagram.
4) Replying to DMs with images
- Status: ❌ not available
- Workaround: Send the image reply directly in Instagram.
Import and metadata limitations
These points often look like a "bug" but are API-related:
- User profile pictures: ❌ no import
- @mentions in comments: ❌ no import
- @mentions in Stories: ❌ no import
What this means
- Some context information is limited. Content and replies remain fully workable, though.
Statistics limitations (Insights)
Every platform delivers different metrics. This is not a KNOWYOURCHAT limitation – it depends on the data Instagram provides through its APIs.
If you want to understand analytics in general, start with Insights.
What you typically get:
- Views, reach
- Likes, comments
- Shares, saves
- Video values like watch time (depending on the content)
What is currently not available:
- Audience info/demographics (e.g. gender, age, top countries) can currently not be retrieved via the Instagram APIs.
What may also be limited:
- individual metrics may be missing depending on post type or time range
- values may be updated with a delay
You'll find details here: Instagram Insights: available statistics.
Best practices (so things still run smoothly)
- Use KNOWYOURCHAT as the center for planning, statuses/approvals, a central inbox, and team collaboration. (Calendar starting point: Introduction to the KNOWYOURCHAT Calendar)
- Deliberately plan for "platform-native" steps (e.g. blocking, Story fine-tuning, DM media) and complete them in Instagram.
- If something is missing, check first: permissions, account type, channel connection. For typical "looks broken" cases, see Troubleshooting the KNOWYOURCHAT Calendar.
