Facebook: Formats and Upload Requirements

Here you will find the most important specifications for Facebook. If you stick to these values, images and videos will usually display cleanly and upload reliably.

✅ A note on currency

Facebook (Meta) regularly adjusts its display and placements. If you want to be on the safe side, quickly check:

  • Does the aspect ratio fit the placement (feed, story, Reel/video)?
  • Is the resolution high enough (ideally Full HD for video)?
  • Is the file not too large (images + videos: 500 MB)?

Then you are usually on the safe side.

In short: What matters on Facebook?

Facebook has many placements (feed, stories, video). To keep content from looking cropped, the aspect ratio is crucial.

Supported formats

For Facebook, these formats work most reliably in practice:

  • Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP
  • Videos (recommended): MP4, MOV

Feed posts (images)

Several image formats work in the Facebook feed. These are the most common in practice:

  • 16:9 (landscape): 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720
  • 1.91:1 (link/banner look): 1200 × 630
  • 1:1 (square): 1080 × 1080
  • 4:5 (portrait): 1080 × 1350

Tip:

  • 16:9 works well for video stills, landscapes, or a "YouTube look".
  • 1.91:1 looks like a classic banner.
  • 1:1 and 4:5 use more screen space on mobile.
  • Max. 10 images per post
  • Max. file size (image): 10 MB

Stories

Stories are made for mobile, so plan in portrait format.

  • Format: 1080 × 1920 (9:16)
  • Safe zone: Leave about 250 px free at the top and bottom, because Facebook displays UI elements there.
  • Video length: max. 60 seconds

Video (feed / video post)

For regular video posts, these values work reliably:

  • Resolution (recommended):
    • 1920 × 1080 (16:9, Full HD)
    • or 1080 × 1920 (9:16, Full HD)
  • Resolution (minimum):
    • 1280 × 720 (16:9)
    • or 720 × 1280 (9:16)
  • Max. file size: 500 MB
  • Duration: up to 240 minutes
  • Frame rate: 30 fps (recommended)

Tip: If a video does not load cleanly or takes too long to "process", re-exporting as MP4 (H.264) with a moderate bitrate often helps.
